The College Welfare Committee has the responsibility of keeping under review matters relevant to the welfare of all students and staff (academic and professional) of the College. It is concerned with issues of policy, not with individual cases. Among the topics considered are: legislation; university and College policies relevant to welfare; issues impacting College members' welfare and wellbeing; provision for College members with disabilities; financial hardship; accommodation; safety and security.

The Committee is chaired by the Warden, and the minutes are received by the Governing Body. It usually meets every term, on Wednesday of 6th Week.

Staff members wishing to raise matters at Welfare Committee can do so by contacting the EDI and Welfare Officer.

Nuffield College has a Staff Council, which aims to maintain, encourage, and where possible enhance communications and relations between the College and all its employees, in particular members of professional support staff.

Any member of staff may raise issues for discussion at Staff Council by contacting a Staff Council Representative.

In the academic year 2021/22, the College undertook to formally review its welfare provision. A Welfare Review Panel, with internal and external representation, was set up with the purpose of considering in detail the range of welfare services provided by the College to its members, and making recommendations to the College’s Governing Body where a need for change or improvement was identified.

The report of the Welfare Review Panel can be read here.

In response to the report's recommendation, as of April 2024 the College has:

  • Joined the University Counselling Service's on-site counsellor programme (Recommendation 1)
  • Continued to subscribe to the BUPA Employee Assistance Programme which provides support to staff and students (Recommendation 2)
  • Conducted a thorough refresh of welfare information provided on the College intranet for students and staff (Recommendation 3)
  • Appointed an EDI and Welfare Officer with responsibilities for developing and supporting welfare in College (Recommendation 5)
