Virtual Private Network (VPN)
intranet.nuff.ox.ac.uk/go-it-vpn
Our VPN enables you to connect to the College network from anywhere to access network resources as though you were on site, at Nuffield. Another benefit is that it uses an 'encrypted tunnel' along which to pass your data between your device and the College (useful if you are on a network you do not trust).
Before connecting to the Nuffield VPN, please ensure that you have anti-virus software installed and your operating system is patched/updated.
-
Windows users - automatic updates can be turned on using the settings in your Control Panel.
-
Mac users - automatic updates can be scheduled using the Software Update screen in System Preferences.
Please note that the old College VPN (vpn.nuff.ox.ac.uk) is being phased out. If you are using a
- College-managed device, the IT Department should have set up ‘always on’ VPN for you (via nuff-vpn.nuff.ox.ac.uk). Do not change this. (You won’t knowingly need a VPN)
- personal device (“bring your own device”, BYOD) use byod-vpn.nuff.ox.ac.uk as encouraged by the instructions from the links below
MULTI-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION
byod-vpn.nuff.ox.ac.uk gives you access to some highly secure resources. Therefore, a second factor (other than just username/password) is needed. See Setting up Microsoft MFA for your nuff.ox.ac.uk account for more information (but do this after you have configured your GlobalProtect VPN settings).
For a complete description of where the VPN is needed, see our page on Which network do I need to use, and how?
Connecting to the Nuffield VPN using the GlobalProtect client
Connecting to the University VPN (Cisco)
Instructions for this client are available at the IT Services site. N.B. If you are using the Nuffield VPN (knowingly, or unknowingly - i.e. it is running in the background), you should not need the University VPN.
