Saving and backing up your files

We strongly recommend that you save your work files to our network file store (nuff-frankel.nuff.ox.ac.uk), either to your personal network file store (J or home drive) or TeamSpace (which is an area of server file storage used for team working). Any files that you save in either of these locations can be accessed remotely, and are backed up daily.

IMPORTANT:

  • Please do not save your files on the server desktop. Please save them to your network file store, as this ensures that the files are accessible whatever server you connect to.
  • If you choose to save files to another location they will not be backed up to our servers. We strongly advise you to register your computer for the IT Services HFS back-up service, or make alternative backup arrangements.
  • Please do not store non-work files, particularly music and pictures on our file store as this should only be used for storing work related files. All other files should be saved to the local drive on your computer or your own personal storage devices.

Personal network file store (J or home drive)

Nuffield PCs owned and managed computers (including terminal servers)
Your personal network file store is visible on the H drive (under HomeDrives, Fellows, then your personal folder) and also your J drive (which is essentially a different way of accessing the same location) when logged on to any Nuffield owned computer. (Please note that you must be connected to the Nuffield College network to access these drives. VPN may be required if offsite or you could follow the instructions under our Accessing network files remotely section.)

Personal computers (not managed by Nuffield)
If you wish to access this via a non-Nuffield device, you will need to connect to it following the instructions under our Accessing network files remotely section.

Using your space on the Nuffield servers as your computer backup

Please avoid doing this.  This tends to consume a huge amount of disk space, often needed by your colleagues, where the backups go stale and are less useful anyway.

  • If you want to save your work locally on your desktop or laptop, please use the IT Services HFS back-up service.  Do not copy everything multiple times to the Nuffield file servers
  • OR Use the files on the Nuffield file servers as your primary copies (they are backed up each night in a way that you can 'click to restore' easily) and just work on copies, offline, temporarily.

Putting full (or partial) backups of your computer(s) on the Nuffield file servers is a poor use of our resources, and may impact performance of the College's servers.  There are plenty of free and better backup alternatives available.

Team space

This area of the network is used for team working. If you would like to share files with other members of the College please contact us at it@nuffield.ox.ac.uk and we will create a TeamSpace server folder for you.
- Please note that it is important for you to regularly review who has been granted access to your shared network drive.
